On February 1, two suspects robbed Shoprite Supermarket in Mayfair and escaped with R250 000 and a DVR recorder.
It is believed that the suspects were targeting SASSA money.
According to an eye witness, two suspects gained entry into the shop under false pretence.
Both men were wearing CCTV operators working suites.

“Suspects walked into the store wearing work suites written CCTV. They told security guards that they are technicians and came to the store to fix the cameras. The suspects then proceeded to the manager’s office where they pulled out their firearm, pointed it at the manager and demanded to go into the cash room”.
“Suspects found two safes in the shop, one had coins and the other held notes, they then demanded notes. They left the shop calmly and headed to their getaway vehicle which was parked outside, in the parking lot. The manager pressed the panic button, however, when the police arrived the suspects were already gone”.
Mayfair’s hawker said police must work together with the community to combat crime.

“We are surrounded by so many police stations yet criminals get away with crime. I understand that every police station has its own jurisdiction but in a case of emergency I think they must work together. Criminals get away with everything in Mayfair and Fordsburg and we do not hear much about convictions,” said the hawker.
Johannesburg police spokesperson, Xoli Mbele confirmed the incident.
“The manager of the shop was approached by two suspects wearing blue jeans and blue jackets, written CCTV on the back, they told the manager that they were there to fix the cameras. The manager asked them to produce their business cards, instead one pulled up his jacket revealing his firearm to the manager. Suspects bound the manager and office staff with cable ties. No injuries were reported”, Mbele said.
An email was sent to Shoprite’s head office for comment, however, was not obtained at the time of publishing.
