The two people accused of killing 22-year-old Jaishika Amtha, made a brief appearance at the Lenasia Magistrates’ Court this morning, where they were denied bail.
Statement’s made by the suspects, 32-year-old Alexis Marais and 48-year-old Sharon Dupreez were read out in court, one of which claimed that Amtha wanted to be killed.
It was alleged in a statement written by Marais, that Amtha had contacted her following a post she had advertised on OLX seeking employment.
Amtha is then said to have offered the women a job, which was to take care of a young lady who had been suffering from cancer.
The statement further read that on March 17, the day of the murder, Amtha had let the suspects into her home, handed them her cellphone, jewellery, laptop, TV and her father’s gun; the gun was later used to kill her.
It was also alleged that Amtha instructed the pair to tie her hands and feet and to blindfold her and bind her mouth with cello tape.
“She laid there waiting to die” the statement read.
Pillows were put over her head and two shots were fired by Marais hitting her in the head.
The items were sold off in Alberton, except for the TV which was found in the couple’s home and gun which is alleged to have been thrown in a veld.
The hearing was postponed to June 29 for further investigation.
Amtha’s Uncle, Darmesh, welcomed the court’s decision to deny the two bail. He, however, disagreed with the pair’s version of events.
“The family was still too traumatised by the incident. They don’t even want to see their (the suspects) faces,” Darmesh said.
Darmesh also expressed his thanks to the Lenasia Community for the support they have given the family since the incident.
“The support has been tremendous. We thank everybody who has been there during this difficult time,” he said.
