On Friday, April 1, the Protea Flying Squad arrested three men on Abubaker Asvat Drive, after they were found in possession of an illegal firearm.
The trio were travelling in a Black BWM in an area dubbed a hotspot for hijackings.
According to a passer-by, the suspects were made to lie on the ground as the police searched them and the vehicle.
Two weeks prior to the incident, on March 16, a BMW was hijacked at the Moroka Bypass and the R558 intersection, not far from Abubaker Asvat Drive.
The vehicle was stationary waiting for the robots to turn green when two suspects accosted the driver.
The two were standing at the robots with the intention of hijacking motorists.
“When the driver saw one of the men with a firearm heading his direction, he drove off. However, the man proceeded to fire at the vehicle,” said the source.
The victim sustained a bullet wound on the hand and managed to drive home before heading to the hospital.
According to police, the area from the N12 bridge next to Nancefield informal settlement, past the Abubaker Asvat Drive, to the corner of Moroka Bypass and K558, next to Protea Glen, are hotspots for hijackings and robberies.
