Thieves broke into  Azara Secondary School in Lenasia Extension 9 on Friday, March 18, and got away with an undisclosed amount of money, 10 cell phones, two printers and five laptops.

According to Ralpa Smit, the Chairperson of the SGB, the security guard was on duty when the incident occurred.

About 3am, while patrolling the school, the security guard noticed the gate at the back of the school was open.

“The guard said he pressed the panic button, but there was no response,” said Smit.

He then waited for about two hours before contacting the caretaker and Smit.

At about 6am Smit arrived at the scene and contacted the Lenasia police who then responded.

The suspects gained entry to the office through the roof. “They ransacked the office and used a grinder to open the safe,” Smit added.

“Azara is a non-fee paying school. We need to repair the damages caused during the burglary. However, that money could have went towards the pupils education,” said headmaster, Gerald Pillay.

Azara Secondary School is situated next to the biggest informal settlement in Lenasia, the Thembelihle informal settlement.
