Amid a taxi battle over routes in Lehae, one person was shot in the leg and another assaulted on Wednesday, September 9. Approximately nine vehicles were gunned down in the area.
A 38-year-old man was arrested on scene in connection with the shooting.
“The men came out of nowhere, surprised us and began shooting,” said one of the drivers.
According to the driver, he and his co-worker were sitting in a squad vehicle when they were approached by a man who demanded to know why his passengers were being off loaded.
“As he was talking I witnessed my colleague in another squad vehicle being pulled out of the vehicle and beaten, that is when I heard gun shots,” the driver explained.
Shots were fired at the vehicles. Some drivers abandoned their vehicles and ran for cover.
“About nine vehicles, taxis and squad vehicles, belonging to various taxi owners from different taxi associations, were damaged and had sustained bullet holes and dents due to stoning,” said Captain Netshivhodza of the Lenasia SAPS.
Also affected by the violence was a resident, Marta, who had a stray bullet hit her radio. The bullet had been shot a few streets from her house.
“I was preparing for work when i heard the gunshots. I was shocked to find the bullet shell stuck in my radio,” Marta relayed.
