A father and his son were shot during a robbery in Azaadville in the early hours of Thursday, March 3.
The father identified as Haroon Saleh was air lifted to hospital where he later died and his son was transported to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital where he later died.
According to Shabier Dabhelia, Chairperson of the Azaadville CPF and a member of the Neighbourhood Watch, three armed suspects entered the Asmet Crescent home through the bathroom window.
The suspects bound the deceased’s son, who was asleep down stairs before two suspects headed upstairs to the main bedroom where Saleh and his wife were asleep. An elderly woman was also asleep in another bedroom.
It has been said that after gun shots were heard coming from the main bedroom, the son was somehow able to free himself and made his way to the main bedroom, where he too was gunned down.
The elderly woman and Saleh’s wife were left unharmed.
“The son was the youngest of four children,” said Ismail Kholvadia, the PRO for Crescent of Hope.
“The Saleh family together with the community are suffering the loss because he was a valuable man in the community,” said Babhelia.
Dubbed an icon in the community, Haroon Saleh was a member of the Neighbourhood Watch and was instrumental in upgrading security measures at Azaadville.
“He was one of the founding members of Crescent of Hope. He was also instrumental in establishing the newly opened women’s rehabilitation centre in De Deur, amongst other things,” said Kholvadia.
He was also involved in the drilling of boreholes in drought areas in the Free State, Eastern Cape, Qwa Qwa and around Africa.
Haroon Saleh is survived by his wife, daughter and three sons.
His funeral will take place today, March 3 and will proceed from 39 Asmet Crescent.
